Today I am here with Ven pongal recipe.  Ven Pongal is a popular South Indian breakfast recipe. This spicy tasty pongal is easy to prepare and can be prepared quickly. Serve this pongal with coconut chutney and sambar.

I love this ven pongal a lot and prepare this often at home. But sometimes I do few changes to the original recipe to suit our taste buds. While I prefer the whole peppers as such in the pongal, my kids tend to pick them and keep it aside, as they don’t prefer to bite into them. So I crush the pepper and cumin into a coarse powder and then add it. Also to keep it simple instead of adding the tempering later, I fry cumin seeds, whole pepper, grated ginger, curry leaves in ghee, add asafoetida, the roasted moong dal, rice, water and cook it. Then just fry the cashews and add it or just skip it.

Ven Pongal

Ven Pongal is a popular South Indian breakfast made with rice and split yellow lentils.

Ingredients :

  • Raw Rice : 1 Cup
  • Moong dal / Yellow Split Lentils / Paasi Paruppu : 1/4 Cup
  • Water : 4 Cups
  • Salt : To taste
  • Ghee : 2 – 3 Tablespoons
  • Cumin Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
  • Whole black pepper : 1 Teaspoon
  • Ginger : 1″ long (grated)
  • Curry Leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Cashews : few
  • Asafoetida : a pinch

Instructions :

  1. In a pressure pan, roast moong dal till a slight aroma starts to emanate.
  2. Then to it add the washed rice, required water, salt and pressure cook in medium heat for a whistle and then turn off the heat.
  3. Wait till the pressure releases, then open the lid.
  4. Then in a pan, heat ghee, add cumin seeds, whole black pepper, curry leaves, grated ginger, cashews and fry till cashews turn golden then add asafoetida and mix well. Turn off the heat.
  5. Add the tempering along with ghee to the cooked rice-dal mixture, mix well and serve it with coconut chutney and/or Sambar.

Notes :

  • If you want it more spicy, you can add green chillies.
  • Instead of adding the whole pepper, you can coarsely powder them and add it.
  • Adjust the water added as per the consistency required.
  • You can add a cup of milk to the cooked rice dal mixture, mix well and then let it simmer till it reaches the required consistency. Then add the tempering mix well and serve. Adding milk gives a rich flavour.
  • To simplify the process, you can do the tempering first and then add roasted moong dal, washed rice and required water, salt and cook.
