Today I am here with Thayir Semiya recipe. Vermicelli is cooked and mixed with seasoned yogurt and finally a tempering of mustard seeds, chillies, ginger and curry leaves are added. Optionally, you can garnish with grapes, pomegranate, grated carrots, raisins, cashews etc., This is very popular recipe in Coimbatore side and is served in most of the functions as an alternative to curd rice. This is very easy to make and can be served in parties too. This creamy curd semiya is sure to win everyone’s heart.

Thayir Semiya

Thayir semiya is vermicelli mixed with seasoned yogurt. A great alternative to curd rice to serve in parties.

Ingredients :

  • Vermicelli : 1 Cup
  • Water : 2 Cups
  • Yogurt : 2 Cups
  • Milk : 1/2 Cup – 3/4 Cup
  • Salt : To taste
  • Oil : 2 Teaspoons
  • Mustard Seeds : 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Green Chillies : 2 nos.
  • Curry Leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Ginger : 1″ long (grated)
  • Asafoetida : a pinch
  • Cilantro : handful
  • Other garnishes (cashews, raisins, grapes, pomegranate, carrots) : as needed.

Instructions :

  1. Dry roast vermicelli till it changes slightly in colour. But take care not to brown it. Then take it and keep it aside.
  2. Bring water to boil. Add roasted vermicelli to it and cook till the vermicelli is cooked. Then turn off the heat and let it cool.
  3. Then add curd/ yogurt, milk and required salt and mix it well and keep it aside.
  4. In the meantime, grate ginger, slit green chillies and keep it ready. Do the necessary prep work for the garnishes too.
  5. Heat oil, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds (optional) when they sputter, add grated ginger, curry leaves and green chillies and fry for a minute. Add asafoetida, mix well and turn off the heat.
  6. Add this tempering to the prepared yogurt- vermicelli mixture. Mix well.
  7. Add garnishes of your choice and serve it. I have added pomegranate, grated carrot, cilantro here. Grapes, raisins, cashews can be added as well.

Notes :

  • We get roasted vermicelli in market too. In that case avoid the first step.
  • Adjust yogurt and milk mixture as per your personal preference. Usually thayir semiya thickens up, if needed add more yogurt or milk to adjust the consistency while serving.
  • You can add garnishes as per your liking. I have added pomegranate, grated carrot, cilantro here. Grapes, raisins, cashews, cucumber can be added as well.

How to make thayir semiya with step by step pictures?
