Spring Onion Paratha, Spicy Scallion Flat Bread

Spring onion paratha recipe – This is a vegan flat bread prepared with spring onions / scallions.

This spring onion paratha can be served for breakfast, kids lunch or can be used as a wrap with filling of your choice. Serve it with raitha, ketchup or any other side dish of your choice.

I have seen people using the name interchangeably for spring onions and scallions. But I came to know recently that they both are different. I have listed below the difference between the two.

Difference between Spring Onion and Scallion

  1. Scallions are long with white stems that did not bulge out while the spring onions have white or red bulb depending on the variety.
  2. Spring Onions are more mature than the scallions.
  3. Scallions have a mild flavour while spring onions have intense flavour. So when using raw, spring onions cannot be used in place of scallions.
  4. However, when they are used in cooking, they can be used interchangeably. As when cooked, the flavour will mellow down.

Now coming back to this recipe, you can use either spring onions or scallions for this paratha. As we cook paratha, the flavour will slightly mellow down. It is very easy to prepare this flatbread. Mix all the ingredients together, add required water and knead well and let it rest for 30 minutes. Then flatten it with rolling pin and cook it. Serve with side dish of your choice. I like to serve it with seasoned yogurt/ raitha.

Spring Onion Paratha

Easy recipe for spicy flat bread with spring onions / scallions. (Vegan)

Ingredients :

  • Wheat Flour : 2 Cup + more for dusting
  • Spring Onions : 1/2 Cup(Chopped)
  • Ajwain / Carom Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Ginger : 1″ long
  • Garlic : 5 cloves
  • Green Chillies : 2 nos.
  • Salt : to taste
  • Oil : 2 Tablespoon + more for cooking
  • Water : As required to knead

Instructions :

  1. Clean, wash and chop spring onions and keep them ready. Pound ginger, garlic and green chillies into a fine paste and keep it aside.
  2. In a bowl, add wheat flour, turmeric powder, ajwain, salt, chopped spring onions, ginger-garlic-chilli paste, then add required water and knead it into a smooth dough.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of oil, knead well and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Divide into equal sized balls. Depending on the size, you would get around 11 – 13 nos.
  5. Take a ball, dust it with flour and flatten it using rolling pin.
  6. Heat griddle, carefully place the flattened paratha, generously apply oil, cook on one side and flip it to other side and cook.
  7. Repeat the process for rest of the dough. Serve with side dish of your choice.

Notes :

  • When using spring onions, use only the green part for the recipe, discarding the bulb.
  • Instead of pounding chilli, ginger and garlic together, you can grind them together and use or use ready made ginger garlic paste too.
  • Instead of green chillies, you can use chilli powder too.
  • If you are not keen about being vegan, you can use 2 tablespoons of ghee instead of oil, for kneading the dough. For cooking also instead of oil, you can use ghee.

how to make spring onion paratha with step by step pictures?

  • Wash and chop spring onions / scallions finely. If the bulb is bigger, then discard it (use it for some other recipe).  Then pound ginger and garlic together along with green chillies and keep it aside.

  • In a bowl, add wheat flour, turmeric powder, salt, ajwain, chopped spring onions, along with ginger garlic chilli paste. Then add enough water and knead it into a smooth dough. Then add 2 tablespoons of oil, knead well and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  • Roll dough into equal sized ball. Take a dough ball, dust it with flour and flatten it using rolling pin.

  • Heat a griddle. Place the flattened dough carefully, apply generous oil, cook on one side and then flip to other side and cook. Paratha is ready. Repeat the process for rest of the dough balls.
