Today I am going to share a simple recipe prepared with prawns- Prawn Thokku.  The only time consuming part here is the cleaning of prawns. Other than that it is very easy and quick to prepare. Prawn thokku can be served with rice, roti or naan.

Let us see how to prepare prawn thokku now.

First clean prawns – devein them and wash them properly. Then chop onions and tomatoes, finely chop garlic and grate ginger. Now heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and fennel seeds, then add chopped onions and curry leaves and fry till onions turn translucent.  Now add the ginger and garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Next tomatoes are added along with turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder. Then mix them well and cook till the tomatoes turn mushy. Then add the cleaned prawns, required salt and mix well and cook till the prawns are cooked and the thokku reaches the required consistency. Turn off the heat, garnish with cilantro and serve it warm.

Prawn Thokku

This is a South Indian style spicy Prawn fry made with tomatoes. This can be served with rice, roti or naan.

Ingredients :

  • Prawns : 500 gms
  • Oil : 2 Teaspoon
  • Mustard Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Fennel seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon Teaspoon
  • Onion : 1 nos.
  • Curry Leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Garlic : 7-8 cloves
  • Ginger : 1 inch long
  • Tomatoes : 2 nos.
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Chilli Powder : 1 Teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder : 2 Teaspoons
  • Salt : to taste
  • Cilantro : handful

Instructions :

  1. Devein and clean the prawns. Refer the video.
  2. Chop onions and tomatoes. Finely chop garlic and grate ginger.
  3. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds and fry. Then add chopped onions and curry leaves and fry till onions turn translucent.
  4. Add ginger and garlic and cook for 30 minutes. Then add tomatoes along with turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander and cook till tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Now add the cleaned prawns, required salt mix well, cover and cook. No need to add any water as prawns will release water as they are cooking.
  6. Once the prawns are cooked, open the lid and cook till the extra liquid evaporates and oil starts to ooze out. Turn off the heat.
  7. Garnish with cilantro and serve it.

Notes :

  • I did not include the time taken for prawns cleaning in the prep time. It will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how experienced and comfortable you are in cleaning.
  • Adjust Chilli powder as per your heat tolerance level.
  • Prawns cook very fast, don’t overcook them. They will turn chewy.
