Today I am here with South Indian style mutton gravy, Mutton Kuzhambu. This recipe is made with freshly ground spices  and coconut. This is a coconut based mutton gravy. This gravy can be served with rice, chappathi, idli, dosa, idiyappam and parotta.

If mutton is not available, lamb can also be used for this gravy.  After coming here to UK lamb meat is available easily compared to the mutton. So I cook with lamb often. You can find the difference between them below.

Difference between lamb and mutton

Younger sheep which is less than one year old is called lamb while older sheep’s meat is called mutton. However in Indian sub continent we refer to the goat’s meat as mutton. Goat’s meat is tougher than the lamb meat which is tender. Hence cooking goat meat is time consuming while lamb meat can be cooked quicker. Also fat content is less in goat meat compared to the lamb meat.

Mutton Kuzhambu

South Indian style mutton curry prepared with freshly ground coconut and spices.

To grind together:

  • Fresh Coconut (grated) : 1/3 Cup
  • Fennel Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
  • Cloves : 4 nos.
  • Cinnamon : 1″ long
  • Poppy Seeds / Khasa khasa : 1 Teaspoon
  • Whole Black Pepper : 1 Teaspoon

Ingredients :

  • Mutton / Lamb : 500 gms
  • Oil : 1 Tablespoon
  • Fennel Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Onions : 2 medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Curry Leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Tomatoes : 3 medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Ginger Garlic Paste : 2 Tablespoons
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder : 3 Teaspoons
  • Chilli Powder : 1 Teaspoon
  • Salt : as per taste
  • Cilantro : handful

Instructions :

  1. Clean and wash mutton. Dice them into cubes of required size and keep it ready.
  2. Grind all the ingredients listed under ‘To grind’ into a finely adding required water. Keep it aside.
  3. In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add fennel seeds, when they sputter, add chopped onions and curry leaves. Fry till onions turn translucent.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes, ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, coriander powder and chilli powder. Mix well and cook till tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Now add the mutton pieces, required water and salt. Mix well and pressure cook in medium heat till mutton is cooked.
  6. Wait till the pressure releases, open the lid and mix well. Then place the cooker back in heat.
  7. Add the ground coconut mixture and mix well. If needed add more water, check the salt and adjust it.
  8. Bring it to boil and let it simmer in low heat for few minutes till the gravy reaches required consistency and oil starts seperating. Turn off the heat.
  9. Garnish with cilantro and serve it warm.

Notes :

  • Instead of mutton(goat meat), lamb can also be used. Please remember lamb is tender and cooks faster. In pressure cooker, when cooked in medium heat one whistle is enough.
  • Mutton will take about 3 – 5 whistles when cooked in medium heat. But will vary with the type of pressure cooker used. Check yours accordingly.
  • Adjust the chilli powder as per your heat tolerance level. For more spicy curry, you can add 2 green chillies along with onions in step 3 and proceed.
  • Adjust the quantity of water added as per the required consistency of gravy.
