Today I am here with South Indian style mutton gravy, Mutton Kuzhambu. This recipe is made with freshly ground spices and coconut. This is a coconut based mutton gravy. This gravy can be served with rice, chappathi, idli, dosa, idiyappam and parotta.
If mutton is not available, lamb can also be used for this gravy. After coming here to UK lamb meat is available easily compared to the mutton. So I cook with lamb often. You can find the difference between them below.
Difference between lamb and mutton
Younger sheep which is less than one year old is called lamb while older sheep’s meat is called mutton. However in Indian sub continent we refer to the goat’s meat as mutton. Goat’s meat is tougher than the lamb meat which is tender. Hence cooking goat meat is time consuming while lamb meat can be cooked quicker. Also fat content is less in goat meat compared to the lamb meat.
