Today I am here with Kodi Kura Recipe. This is a spicy and flavourful, Andhra style chicken curry and can be served with rice, roti, parotta or dosa. This chicken curry is prepared without coconut . I got this recipe from one of our family friend few years back. Whenever I try this recipe, I always get compliments for it. I have also posted this recipe in my other blog and it is one of the popular recipes there. But still I wanted to post the recipe here with step-wise pictures and prepared it over the weekend,  clicked pictures and here I am with the recipe.

Yield : 4 servings


To marinate :

  • Chicken : 500 gms
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Chilli Powder : 1 1/2 Teaspoons
  • Ginger Garlic Paste : 2 Tablespoons
  • Salt : As required for the chicken

For masala powder :

  • Fennel Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
  • Cumin Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Poppy Seeds : 1 Teaspoon
  • Cinnamon : 1″ long
  • Cloves : 5 nos.
  • Cardamom : 4 nos.

Other Ingredients :

  • Oil : 2 Tablespoons
  • Cumin Seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Star Anise : 1 no.
  • Red Onions : 2 nos. (medium sized, finely chopped)
  • Curry leaves : 1 Sprig
  • Tomatoes : 3 nos. (medium sized)
  • Ginger Garlic Paste : 1 Tablespoon
  • Masala Powder : From the recipe listed above.
  • Coriander Powder : 1 Tablespoon
  • Salt : To taste
  • Cilantro / Coriander Leaves : To garnish

Instructions :

  1. Clean and wash chicken. Marinate it with turmeric powder, chilli powder, ginger garlic paste along with required salt for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Grind fennel seeds, cumin seeds, poppy seeds, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom into a fine powder.
  3. Puree tomatoes and keep it aside.
  4. In a pan, heat oil, add cumin seeds, star anise and fry. Then add chopped onions and curry leaves, fry till onions turn translucent.
  5. Then add pureed tomatoes and ginger garlic paste and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add the marinated chicken, coriander powder, masala powder, mix well and cook for another 2 – 3 minutes.
  7. Next add 1 cup to 1 1/2 Cup of water, mix well and cook for about 10 minutes in medium heat.
  8. Reduce the heat and let it simmer till oil starts seperating in the gravy. Turn off the heat.
  9. Garnish with cilantro and serve it warm.

Notes :

  • Adjust the chilli powder as per your heat tolerance level.
  • Marinate for atleast 30 minutes. But more marination time the better.
  • Chicken lets out water while cooking, so adding 1 – 1 1/2 cup of water is enough depending on the consistency required.
  • This chicken curry can be cooked in pressure cooker too.

How to make kodi kura with step wise pictures?

  • Next add marinated chicken, coriander powder and ground masala powder, Mix well and cook for another 2 –  3 minutes.

  • Then add 1 – 1 1/2 cups of water and required salt. Mix well, cover and cook in medium heat for about 10 minutes.

  • Reduce the heat and let it simmer till oil starts separating in the gravy. Turn off the heat.

  • Garnish with cilantro and serve it warm.
