The next recipe I am going to share is a simple rasam recipe made with garlic and pepper – Garlic Pepper Rasam / Poondu Milagu Rasam. This rasam recipe does not require rasam powder, tomato or dal. As the name suggests the flavour of garlic and pepper is predominant in this rasam. This rasam aids in digestion and also can be had as a remedy for cold.

Garlic : 4 – 5 cloves
Pepper : 2 Teaspoon
Cumin : 1 Teaspoon
Tamarind : small lemon ball size
Oil : 2 Teaspoons
Mustard seeds : 1/4 Teaspoon
Curry leaves : 1 Sprig
Asafoetida : a pinch
Turmeric Powder : 1/4 Teaspoon

Soak tamarind in a cup of warm water for atleast 15 minutes, extract the juice and discard the pulp.
In a blender, grind garlic, pepper and cumin coarsely.
In a pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds and when they sputter add curry leaves and fry for a minute.
Then add the ground garlic mixture and asafoetida and fry for a minute or two.
Next add the extracted tamarind juice and 2 cups of water. Then add salt and mix well.
Wait till froth starts to form on the surface. But do not let it boil. Then turn off the heat.
Garnish with cilantro and serve it.
Increase or decrease pepper as per your heat tolerance level.
Tanginess in the rasam depends on the tamarind. Check yours and adjust water accordingly.
My mom grinds a sprig of curry leaves along with garlic, pepper and cumin. You can try that too.
