Dal Palak, Spinach Dal, Palak Dal, Palak Moong Dal

Today I am here with Dal Palak Recipe. It is a simple dal fry made with moong dal and spinach. This easy to prepare dal recipe is healthy and tasty too. This spinach dal can be served with both rice and roti.

I prepare this comforting dal once in a week and serve it with rice, drizzle of ghee and fried potatoes. My kids love this combination.

Dal Palak

Simple dal fry made with moong dal and spinach. A healthy and tasty dal recipe that can be served with rice or roti.

Ingredients :

  • Moong Dal : 1 Cup
  • Spinach : 2 Cups
  • Oil : 2 Teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds : 1/2 Teaspoon
  • Onion : 1 No.
  • Tomatoes : 2 Nos.
  • Garlic : 5 cloves
  • Ginger : 1″ long
  • Turmeric Powder : 1/4 Teaspoon
  • Chilli Powder : 1 Teaspoon
  • Coriander Powder : 2 Teaspoons
  • Salt : to Taste

Instructions :

  1. Pressure cook 1 cup of moong dal with 2.5 cups of water. Mash it and keep it aside.
  2. In the meantime do all the necessary preparations like chopping onions, tomatoes, cleaning and chopping spinach and pounding ginger and garlic together.
  3. In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds. When they sputter, add onions and fry till they turn translucent.
  4. Then add tomatoes, pounded ginger garlic, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder. Mix well and cook till tomatoes turn mushy.
  5. Next add spinach and cook for 2 – 3 minutes.
  6. To this add mashed spinach, required water (about 1.5 cups) and salt. Mix well.
  7. Bring it to boil and let it simmer for 2 – 3 minutes and turn off the heat. Serve it warm.

Notes :

  • Toor dal can be used instead of moong dal. You can also use a combination of both.
  • Instead of pounding ginger and garlic together, you can mince / finely chop them and add.
  • You can also add a teaspoon of garam masala for additional flavour. If adding garam masala, adjust chilli powder to suit your taste.
  • If you prefer, you can add some lemon juice at the end, mix well and serve.

How to make dal palak with step by step pictures?

  • Add spinach and cook for 2 – 3 minutes.

  • Mash the cooked dal and add it.

  • Then add required water, salt and mix well.

  • Bring it to boil then reduce heat and let it simmer for 2 – 3 minutes. Then turn off the heat. Serve it warm.
